"Magic Burns" by Ilona Andrews

Magic Burns is the 2nd book in Andrews' Kate Daniels series. The first book, Magic Bites, rocked my world this past summer, and I encourage everyone to run out and buy both books and read them right away.

The first book introduces an edgy world where magic seems to have a mind of its own. This world is filled with weres, vampires, knights, witches... all in a gritty urban setting. Kate Daniels is a mercenary packing a lot of steel and magic, kicking asses, taking names, and fending off would-be suitors. Book two keeps up the pace, bringing some Celtic deities, sex-crazed werehyenas, and a smart-mouthed orphan into the mix. I can't wait to see what book three, Midnight Games, will offer. The world is fascinated, the characters are entertaining, and the writing is pure art. It's so exciting to find a new author/series this good.

At last, there's a new series to fill the void left by earlier Anita Blake books.

  1. Yes, love this series! I actually went back and reread my favorite parts of Magic Bites after reading Magic Burns. I noticed that Curran + Kate interactions were less numerous in Magic Burns, but they're on another level. Can't wait to see how that plays out.

  2. I know what you mean about the Curran + Kate. In "Bites" I was mostly put off by his advances because, like Kate, I felt he was just being an asshole. In "Burns" however there's a much more intriguing undertone that makes me want to actually like him.
