"Cry Wolf" by Patricia Briggs

I obviously love paranormal fiction, but I've never been much a fan of werewolves. Unlike vampires, witches, and demons, werewolves always seemed a little dull and distasteful to me. That's why, I suppose, I'm pleased by how much I like Briggs' Mercedes Thompson series. Her way of writing werewolves is much more interesting to me than that of, say, Kelley Armstrong, Laurell K. Hamilton, or Keri Arthur.

Now here's Cry Wolf, a novel exclusively about the Aspen Creek pack introduced in the first Mercy book, Moon Called. Since I originally found Charles to be very intriguing -- more so than his brother, Samuel, or father, Bran -- I was excited to read a book with him in the spotlight. I haven't, sadly, read yet the story "Alpha and Omega," from the anthology On the Prowl, which begins Charles and Anna's story. Still, I was able to pick up the plot and found Cry Wolf an entertaining book. Maybe not as gripping as the Mercy books, but it certainly stands up on its own. As ever, Briggs' writing is excellent, her characters full of life, and her plot well-constructed and not hostage to the romance between main characters. I may not be a werewolf convert, but I'm definitely sold on the Alpha and Omega series.

  1. Still in process of reading this book. Will probably finish tonight. Was feeling a little left out in the beginning. Now I know where I can read how Charles and Anna meet. I quickly warmed up to the characters. Great book. Btw love the new "Faefever" ticker. Keep up the good work.
